In addition to the Roman Pilum, which bent upon impact, many war javelin designs have a weak point in the center which makes the likely to shatter if they hit the ground or anything harder than flesh. You can tell a war javelin from a hunting one because the latter lacks the weak spot.

Most of the weapons/tools we think of today as spears where never intended to be thrown anyway. They were long reach thrusting weapons. Six inches of steel/iron/bronze was pricy back in the day and flint even more so. You’d only it throw it at an enemy/prey in desperation.
