Whips can't actually do stuff like wrap around a beam or branch so you can swing over. But the tip of the whip does break the speed of sound and you can cut a can in half. But not a person.
I'll bet if you weighted the tip of the whip it would wrap around a branch or beam; I don't know if you could get it out of the tree afterwards though.
I always wondered about how the whip was retrieved. I mean if it was secure enough to swing from, how'd you get it loose? I'm pretty sure they never showed that in the movies.
